Shapiro&#8217;s<\/strong> mystery<strong> The Art Forger<\/strong> feeds into<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/03\/19\/us\/fbi-says-it-has-clues-in-1990-isabella-stewart-gardner-museum-art-heist.html?pagewanted=all\"> recent new<\/a>s  of the unsolved 1990 heist of art works from the Isabella Stewart  Gardiner Museum without diminishing the possibility of the fictional  activity in this book.\u00a0 The discussions about copying and forgery deserve a read, too.\u00a0 Also regarding this famous art theft,\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/video\/2013\/06\/17\/us\/100000002285749\/the-trial-of-whitey-bulger.html\">Whitey Bulger&#8217;s trial<\/a> has not diminished the possible accuracy of <strong>David Hosp&#8217;s<\/strong> explanation in his mystery,<strong> Among Thieves<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nora Roberts&#8217; Chasing Fire<\/strong> was a useful introduction to &#8220;Hot  Shots&#8221;,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/07\/02\/us\/arizona-blaze-rages-on-as-crews-cope-with-death-of-19-firefighters.html?pagewanted=all\"> the specially trained firefighters, nineteen of whom were killed<\/a> in  an Arizona wildfire last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>These are just the most recent and, maybe, the most particular examples I could think of.\u00a0 An acquaintance asked why I read about things that had not happened to me or that I didn&#8217;t know much about.\u00a0 I read to be ready for whatever is next, I said thinking about it.\u00a0 Now, if I only knew what was next, this would really work.\u00a0 The books of Roseledge Books are my ongoing, best faith effort to help you and me be ready. \u00a0 The world needs us.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-6Xv9HIJhey4\/TVH5ZCmfq7I\/AAAAAAAAC4U\/W3W4HjLXCFg\/IMG_0221.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[1191]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-6Xv9HIJhey4\/TVH5ZCmfq7I\/AAAAAAAAC4U\/W3W4HjLXCFg\/h480\/IMG_0221.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0221.jpg\" width=\"420\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The fog rolls in, the fog rolls out, the fog rolls in again and again<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Notes to commenters:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Carol, what book did your daughter so long ago choose?\u00a0 I wonder if RB still has it.\u00a0 The underlying question is: are there books RB should try always to have?\u00a0 And find out if Bev, who has also been to RB and understands its spirit, has titles to suggest.<\/p>\n<p>M from NC: <strong>Writing on Stone: Scenes from a Maine Island Life by Christina Marsden Gillis<\/strong> sounds wonderful, especially with its ties to Ruth Moore, but it is not available in paperback; and if ever there was a summer when hardcover mildew would set in on the way home from the post office, this is it.\u00a0 RB does try to have<strong> Ruth Moore&#8217;s Spoonhandle<\/strong> always available, but maybe more titles would be even better.<\/p>\n<p>And just in case the Scrabblers return to Roseledge, which I hope you do, I have been reading to get ready for word challenges.\u00a0 And I now have <a href=\"http:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/17\/the-role-of-a-dictionary\/?hp\">evidence<\/a> to support my continuing assertion that a word does not have to be in a dictionary to be a word.<\/p>\n<p>Out, out damn fog.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People who read know more than people who don&#8217;t, they are more interesting because they think outside themselves, and they are more useful because they are more likely to be ready for whatever is next.
