For instance, I loved learning about the Middle East from <strong>William Dalrymple\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0805061770?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0805061770\">From the Holy Mountain<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0805061770\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/em>, Rory Stewart\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0156031566?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0156031566\">The Places In Between<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0156031566\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/em>, or Carl Raswan\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000OKAH54?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B000OKAH54\">Black Tents of Arabia (My Life Among the Bedouins)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000OKAH54\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/em><\/strong> because each walked the terrain, albeit at different times, in different areas, and for different reasons, but I knew everything each author noted was verifiable.  Given their specificity, maybe these works are journals rather than memoirs, and probably I like journals more; but books of this kind are hard to find.  All of these examples were shelved under Travel at the bookstore when first I checked.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"img_1814.JPG\" href=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/img_1814.JPG\" rel=\"lightbox[123]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/img_1814.JPG\" alt=\"img_1814.JPG\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Fig.#31.  Easy to think about linking with the larger world. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Then we have today\u2019s memoir-ugliness.  James Frey embellished his memoir of addiction and recovery and the woman who lives in Oregon invented her memoir of living on the mean streets of Los Angeles.  Memory is always an iffy thing and mostly depends on whose remembering, but why lie?  Why not call the work fiction and admit to the sources of inspiration in the acknowledgements, especially if no backup journals exist?  Humph, I say.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, Roseledge Books has some fine Maine journal\/memoir reads.  My favorites (in no particular order) include:<br \/>\n<strong>James Balano\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/089272062X?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=089272062X\">The Log of the Skipper&#8217;s Wife<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=089272062X\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/em><\/strong> (actually Dorothea Moulton Balano\u2019s \u201clog\u201d of her time sailing with Captain Fred Balano in the early 1900\u2019s; the Balanos lived in Port Clyde)<br \/>\n<strong>Celia Thaxter\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/061819908X?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=061819908X\">An Island Garden<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=061819908X\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/em><\/strong> (with wonderful paintings by Maurice Pendergast; garden is currently being recreated)<br \/>\n<strong>Elizabeth Coatsworth\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000Z2AU80?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B000Z2AU80\">Personal Geography<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000Z2AU80\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Jim Sturba\u2019s <em>Frankie\u2019s Place<\/em><\/strong> (Midwesterner joins many-generationed \u201crusticator\u201d on Mt. Desert)<br \/>\n<strong>May Sarton\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0393313905?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0393313905\">The House by the Sea: A Journal<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0393313905\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/em><\/strong> (her first journal after moving to Maine)<br \/>\nClearly, Maine draws writers.  And Roseledge Books hopes readers, too.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"img_2483.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/img_2483.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[123]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/img_2483.jpg\" alt=\"img_2483.jpg\" \/><\/a><strong><br \/>\nFig.#32.  Sea Street shadows as backbone of a novel\u2019s events?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fun of blurred journal lines is deciding how much of a novel is actually a journal with new names.  Consider, for example, <strong>Sarah Orne Jewett\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1593082622?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1593082622\">The Country of the Pointed Firs<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1593082622\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/em>.<\/strong> She visited Tenants Harbor and rented a room and a schoolhouse in Martinsville.
