Good water-travel book, great tsunami. She\u2019s also reading Julia Spencer-Fleming\u2019s In the Bleak Midwinter (A Rev. Clare Fergusson and Russ Van Alstyne Mystery)<\/a><\/em> <\/strong>(chosen from my summer \u201ctested\u201d shelf) and is nearly ready for books three, four, and five of the adventures of the police chief and the Vicar. After Krakatoa<\/strong><\/em> comes Doris Kearns Goodwin\u2019s Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, the late August book club choice.<\/p>\n

For the garden and the mystery, I\u2019m reading and liking a lot Mark Mills\u2019 The Savage Garden<\/a><\/em><\/strong>which is about deciphering the puzzle in the pattern of a centuries-old garden in Italy. I love it when a book makes me look differently at something I thought I knew enough about. There\u2019s always time for Judge Deborah Knott\u2019s North Carolina adventures in Margaret Maron\u2019s <\/strong>latest, Winter’s Child<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. In the wings are Per Petterson\u2019s Out Stealing Horses: A Novel<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (it has a Norwegian voice, says my Norwegian friend who liked it a lot) interspersed with Daniel Silva\u2019s<\/strong> latest Gabriel Allon adventure, The Secret Servant (Gabriel Allon)<\/a><\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Scott is trying to find an edition of Sarah Orne Jewett\u2019s The Country of the Pointed Firs and Other Stories<\/a><\/em><\/strong> that has additional stories titled \u201cThe [something] of Betsy Lane\u201d and \u201cTown Poor.\u201d Roseledge Books has three editions of CPF <\/strong><\/em>(our locally-claimed classic), but none worked. He\u2019s off to a St. George Historical Society potluck and talk about the Poor Farm of St. George. Maybe SOJ<\/strong> used as a model that very (now defunct) Poor Farm behind the handsome, renovated farm house across from George the Potter\u2019s.<\/p>\n
