The answer, of course, is &#8220;of course.&#8221;  The gauntlet was tossed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/img_2466.jpg\" title=\"img_2466.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[142]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/img_2466.jpg\" alt=\"img_2466.jpg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/img_2466.jpg\" title=\"img_2466.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[142]\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Fig. #37.  Not the Nile, but surely another country.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I quickly scanned my mental rolodex of books on the shelves, so I could stay on the porch while they looked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dalrymple, William.  <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0805061770?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0805061770\">From the Holy Mountain: A Journey among the Christians of the Middle East<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0805061770\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nOkay, checking 1500 years of monastery living from Mt. Athos to Egypt (as first noted in the late 6th Century by two travelers) may not be an obvious choice, but it\u2019s a great book.<br \/>\n<strong>Kapuscinski, Ryszard.  <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1400078784?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1400078784\">Travels with Herodotus (Vintage International)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1400078784\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019m only at the point where the journalist\/author has been assigned to cover Africa in the early 60\u2018s, so I\u2019m not sure how much Egypt is mentioned; but his chapters on his first-ever visits to India and China are wonderful.<br \/>\n<strong>Lavagnino, Alessandra.  <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1586420992?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1586420992\">Librarians of Alexandria: A Tale of Two Sisters<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1586420992\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nOkay, this well-reviewed novel takes place in multi-generational, contemporary Italy, but RB would have this on the title alone.  I haven\u2019t read it yet, but the back-of-the-book remarks suggest at least a trip to Alexandria, Egypt is included.<br \/>\n<strong>Mahfouz, Naguib. <em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0385264666?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0385264666\">Palace Walk (Cairo Trilogy)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0385264666\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nSet in Cairo in the 1920\u2019s, this story of a Muslim family\/household is part of the author\u2019s Cairo Trilogy, which is part of the reason Naguib Mahfouz won the Nobel prize for Literature.  I loved reading and learning from this novel, but it may not be for every Nile-goer.<br \/>\n<strong>Silva, Daniel.  <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0451224507?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0451224507\">The Secret Servant (Gabriel Allon)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0451224507\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThe latest in a great series featuring Gabriel Allon, art restorer and Israel agent, this adventure features European-based radical Islamists, especially those with ties to Egypt.  Good, but scary, perspective.<\/p>\n<p>No takers for any of those.  I didn\u2019t have <strong>Alan Moorhead\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0060956399?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0060956399\">The White Nile<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0060956399\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><\/em> <\/strong>or <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0060956402?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0060956402\">The Blue Nile<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0060956402\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><\/strong><\/em>, I forgot<strong> Elizabeth Peter\u2019s<\/strong> Amelia Peabody series set in Egypt\u2019s early 20th C. pyramid country (RB has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0445406518?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0445406518\"><em><strong>Crocodile on the Sandbank (Amelia Peabody, Book 1<\/strong><\/em>)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0445406518\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/>), and visiting archaeologist Eric regaled all with tales of the black pharaohs on the \u201cother side\u201d of the Nile, in spite of my several loud &#8220;ahems&#8221; because RB had no books on the topic.  All of this was such fun.  The boating couple chose <strong>Annie Dillard&#8217;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0061239542?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0061239542\">The Maytrees: A Novel<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0061239542\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><\/em><\/strong> and <strong>John McPhee&#8217;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0374522596?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=therosbooblo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0374522596\">The Control of Nature<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=therosbooblo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0374522596\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><\/em><\/strong> and suggested we start a salon.  The front porch looking over the harbor invites magical conversations.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/rosefy2.jpg\" title=\"rosefy2.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[142]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/rosefy2.jpg\" alt=\"rosefy2.jpg\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFig. #36.  Can you hear the magic? Feel the high tide breeze? Know for one minute that all&#8217;s right with the world?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nThe first fresh breeze of Fall has come.  The oak trees rustle heavily, the water ripples offshore (toward Harts Neck across the harbor), and the Queen Anne\u2019s lace, past its prime but still willing, waves with the goldenrod.  I haven\u2019t seen a stand of blue asters or red sumac yet, but I haven\u2019t driven 131 lately to check the ditches.  All of this affirms that summer is too short and change can be beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>The webcam is off until next summer.
