{"id":2554,"date":"2020-10-22T19:43:29","date_gmt":"2020-10-23T02:43:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/?p=2554"},"modified":"2020-10-23T21:41:10","modified_gmt":"2020-10-24T04:41:10","slug":"newspaper-follow-up-qanon-mostly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/?p=2554","title":{"rendered":"NEWSPAPER FOLLOW-UP, QANON MOSTLY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>It&#8217;s best to read yesterday&#8217;s post first<\/strong> because this one mostly builds on QAnon comments therein.\u00a0 Herein, I am quoting at length from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/21\/opinion\/q-anon-conspiracy.html\">Farhad Manjoo&#8217;s NYT article<\/a> <\/strong>because I worry that my links don&#8217;t always go through, and no one says it better than Farhad Manjoo.\u00a0 I like his sources, too.\u00a0 So, onto his latest QANON comments.<\/p>\n<p>First, a bit about why we should worry about QANN:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/21\/opinion\/q-anon-conspiracy.html\">Farhad Manjoo talked about QAnon<\/a> with &#8220;Joan Donovan<\/strong>, a pioneering scholar of misinformation and\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/mediamanipulation.org\/definitions\/media-manipulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">media manipulation<\/a> [who] is very worried.\u00a0 [She studies] the way that activists, extremists and propagandists surf currents in our fragmented, poorly moderated media ecosystem to gain attention and influence society,&#8230;\u00a0 [but especially to reach] &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people who have been &#8216;Q-pilled,&#8217; QAnon plays a much deeper role in their lives; <strong>it has elements of a support group, a political party, a lifestyle brand, a collective delusion, a religion, a cult, a huge multiplayer game and an extremist network&#8230;.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Then, a bit about how QANON morphs and spreads, which is necessary to understand in order to diminish it:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Donovan thinks QAnon represents a new, flexible infrastructure for conspiracy. QAnon has origins in a tinfoil-hat story about a D.C.-area pizza shop, but over the years it has adapted to include theories about the \u201cdeep state\u201d and the Mueller probe, Jeffrey Epstein, and a wild variety of misinformation about face masks, miracle cures, and other hoaxes regarding the coronavirus. QAnon has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/florida-politics\/buzz\/2020\/08\/26\/politifact-qanon-hoax-has-been-linked-to-violence-fox-news-greg-gutfeld-falsely-claimed-it-hasnt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linked to many instances of violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and law enforcement and terrorism researchers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ctc.usma.edu\/the-qanon-conspiracy-theory-a-security-threat-in-the-making\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discuss it as a growing security threat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8230;.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;[<strong>QANON] is now a densely networked conspiracy theory that is extendible, ad<\/strong><\/span><strong>aptable, flexible and resilient to take down,&#8217;<\/strong> Donovan said of QAnon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>VERY SCARY STUFF!\u00a0<\/strong> \u00a0What to do?\u00a0 When in doubt, I VOTE AND HOPE AND PLAN!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2558\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2558\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2558 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_20201022_112226462_HDR-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_20201022_112226462_HDR-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_20201022_112226462_HDR-420x315.jpg 420w, http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_20201022_112226462_HDR-600x450.jpg 600w, http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_20201022_112226462_HDR-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2558\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I vote, you vote, we all vote and democracy lives.\u00a0 BLUE WAVE ALERT<\/p><\/div>\n<p>To be fair or maybe to be an idiot, I should note that in the Manjoo article, &#8220;Donovan compares QAnon to\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1979\/10\/28\/archives\/charles-coughlin-30s-radio-priest-dies-fiery-sermons-stirred-furor.html\">the Rev. Charles Coughlin<\/a>, the priest whose radio show spread anti-Semitism in the Depression-era United States. Stopping Coughlin\u2019s hate took a concerted effort,&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>FULL DISCLOSURE:<\/strong>\u00a0 My dad was Charles J[ohn] Coghlan [hard &#8220;g&#8221;], a good and generous man, who had not a bigoted bone in his body.\u00a0 On at least one occasion, he did sign a Father Coughlin picture,\u00a0 but, he didn&#8217;t look anything like the priest, and he signed as he was, Charles J. Coghlan.\u00a0 My dad was an amiable man, former Wahpeton mayor, and soon thereafter, a Richland County Commissioner. Thus, like his four uncles who served in the ND state legislature and his dad who was mayor of St. John, Chair of the Board of Education, and founder of the local chapter of the Isaac Walton League, he served though elective office.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know who some people thought they were voting for, but if they voted for Charles J.
