MINUTES OF THE POETRY CLUB, September 15, 2021<\/b><\/p>\n

Intrepid Convener Gary, as always, set our task: to write two Limmericks [sic] in the style of Gary.\u00a0 I amended the task.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Limerick 1: <\/span>\u00a0AND NOW, SO DO I.<\/b><\/p>\n

There once was a bird artist named Edward Lear,\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>whose poems of\u00a0 5 lines were both pithy and clear.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A limerick, it is, he said with panache.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Add witty and bawdy, agreed Ogden Nash.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Gary wants more — 4 couplets, 8 lines,\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>to capture his many cavorters\u2019\u00a0 entwines.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then comes to mind\u00a0 dad, who loved\u00a0 Nash\u2019s stuff,\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and thought 5 true lines were poetry enough.<\/span><\/p>\n

And, now, so do I.<\/span><\/p>\n

Discussion:<\/b>\u00a0 I quite liked my own effort, especially finding out that Edward Lear was a bird artist, and, I thought, cleverly arguing for the traditional format which I then used in my second limerick, but no comments and only very modest applause followed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0We of the Landmark, an unruly lot, may not act with amazing grace.<\/span><\/p>\n

But our lobby bobby is up to the task of helping us save our own face.<\/span><\/p>\n

He\u2019s a \u00a0 mixer, a fixer,\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 a toni<\/span>c, an elixir,<\/span><\/p>\n

A man for all seasons, a man for all reasons is Devin, the heart of our place.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gary signaled that it was time to stop, so I graciously did not question Steve’s credibility as an Irish word fiddler.\u00a0 There is always next month’s meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n
