But reading his obituary reminded me of something he did that was both memorable and silly, instead of just being memorable and bad. You remember his quote:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are <\/span><strong>known knowns<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are things we know we know. There are<\/span><strong> known unknowns<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are\u00a0 things we know that we do not know. But there are also<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>unknown<\/strong> <strong>knowns<\/strong> that are things we think we know, that it turns out\u00a0 we do not, and there are <\/span><strong>unknown unknowns<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are the things we don&#8217;t know we don&#8217;t know.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0[A mashup from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/30\/us\/politics\/donald-rumsfeld-dead.html\">NYT ,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/style\/rumsfeld-dead-words-known-unknowns\/2021\/07\/01\/831175c2-d9df-11eb-bb9e-70fda8c37057_story.html\">WP,<\/a>\u00a0et.al]<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0 \u00a0wondered if I could apply it to my pandemic life learning style.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are known knowns that I think about on many days, in many ways,<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The Irish CLEARLY beat the Vikings to Iceland, and maybe to Newfoundland.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Libraries matter on all days and in all ways, and may just save the world.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Adapting is a way of life, and practice promises possibilities.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<strong>There are a lot of less interesting known s that I only think about when provoked,<\/strong>\u00a0e.g.\u00a0 Donald Rumsfeld, Cosmic Crisp apples, photos of dawn, Louise Gluck, Scott&#8217;s mispronunciation of Flucker Street, algorithms, regional hotdishes, radio voices, peppy poets, Russell Wilson&#8217;s finger, dreadful Texas etc., etc., etc.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<strong>There are\u00a0 unknown knowns that are many and memorable<\/strong> gaffes, laughs, apologies, and, on RARE occasion a suggestion that I might have been wrong.\u00a0 These usually end up in the stories of my life.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<strong>And there are probably way too many unknown unknowns that I don&#8217;t think about because I don&#8217;t know they exist to think about, but if I knew they existed, I would certainly know enough about them to have an opinion and take it from there.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Seattle edges into Fall, or should I say &#8220;dribbles&#8221;?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2733\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2733\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2733\" src=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_20210925_151126334-450x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_20210925_151126334-450x600.jpg 450w, http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_20210925_151126334-360x480.jpg 360w, http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_20210925_151126334-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2733\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">How do I know it\u2019s fall in Seattle? Let me count the leaves\u2019 colors.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AFRGH!\u00a0 who on earth would choose to watch &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mare of Easttown\u201d hyped as being &#8220;in the tradition o<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/15\/arts\/television\/mare-of-easttown-review-kate-winslet.html\">f Middle American miserabilism,<\/a> a genre of shows that aren\u2019t about much of anything besides their characters\u2019 despair and the painstakingly rendered small-town or suburban milieus that inevitably cause it.&#8221;?\u00a0 MISERABILISEM?\u00a0 AARRGGHH!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, I<\/span>\u00a0am from the<strong> tenth largest city<\/strong> in North Dakota, a<strong> Northern Plains state<\/strong> and a daughter of Charles Coghlan, Wahpeton&#8217;s youngest mayor, 1942-46, an activist, who controversially purchased land for city airport,\u00a0 then rented the land to nearby farmers until there were some airplanes, thereby recovering the land&#8217;s cost and then some.\u00a0 For the record, my dad was not the rabble-rousing priest, Father Charles Coughlin, though he would &#8220;autograph&#8221; an occasional picture, if asked.\u00a0 I love my dad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I had a great good time growing up, and I don&#8217;t remember a day when I was miserable<\/strong> or bored.\u00a0 So a big HISS to\u00a0 \u00a0&#8220;Mare of Easttown .\u00a0 &#8221;\u00a0 For other takes on Wahpeton, see <strong>Chuck Klosterman&#8217;s <em>Downtown Owl<\/em><\/strong> and <strong>Larry Woiwode&#8217;s<em> Beyond the Bedroom Wall.\u00a0<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am in a politically delicate situation.\u00a0 The rocks are an unwanted gift, not able to be returned or re-gifted..
