(See <a href=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/?page_id=70\">webcam<\/a>.)\u00a0 Cozy indoors with no leaks, a change from years past.  Millie and I will spend the afternoon artfully arranging books for your appreciation, but you have to come to fully appreciate the attraction of a good cover, well placed among other &#8220;like&#8221; books.  But why are they &#8220;like&#8221; and are the covers good for you?  Those are the questions and that is the fun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/12\/06\/books\/review\/Queenan-t.htm\">Joe Queenan argues for   the importance of a  book\u2019s cover in choosing what to read<\/a>,\u00a0 but I can&#8217;t remember whether our reasons for display support his reasons for choosing. \u00a0 Cover reactions may be too personal to generalize.\u00a0 Only when you get here and look or don&#8217;t look at a title will we know if we hit it.\u00a0 A bookseller&#8217;s life is never humdrum.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_81\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-81\" href=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=81\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-81\" title=\"img_2664\" src=\"http:\/\/roseledgebooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/img_2664.jpg\" alt=\"Fig. #86. Roseledge Books: gym for the mind, open from 2-6 p.m.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A friend is organizing a conference for caregivers in danger of burning out, which probably covers all caregivers.\u00a0 Surely a roster of Roseledge Books that might &#8220;take them away&#8221; from whatever is the burden of the moment is just the thing.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been thinking about categories.\u00a0 How about real-life adventures?\u00a0 Or multigenerational sagas?\u00a0 Or fat biographies with lots of detail?\u00a0 Or books about other times and\/or places? Your suggestions?<\/p>\n<p>Categories need examples.\u00a0 Would you include and where would you put the following?<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Michaelis&#8217; N.C. Wyeth<\/strong> (local tie)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roy Hoxham&#8217;s The Great Hedge of India<\/strong> (not even a remote local tie, but great read)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Louise Erdrich&#8217;s Plague of Doves<\/strong> ( strong, very indirect local tie)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Douglas Brinkley&#8217;s Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt and the Crusade for America<\/strong> (maybe local tie)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cokie Roberts&#8217; Founding Mothers<\/strong> (local tie)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Barbara Kingsolver and family&#8217;s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle:\u00a0 A Year of Food Life <\/strong>(local tie in spirit of Produce Lady)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diana Gabaldon&#8217;s Outlander<\/strong> (no tie, but fat and first of series)<\/p>\n<p>Suggestions welcome, but hurry.<\/p>\n<p>So far the book about books that mattered to Oscar Wilde has less pith than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/02\/opinion\/02brooks.html\">David Brooks&#8217; column<\/a> about books that mattered to Christopher Hitchens, but the comparison may be unfair as both DB and CH are still alive.\u00a0 The real point of all of this may be that I have neglected Oscar<span class=\"binding\"> <\/span> for a second adventure with Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander. <strong>(Thomas Wright&#8217;s Built of Books;\u00a0 Stieg Larsson&#8217;s Girl Who Walked Through Fire<\/strong>)\u00a0 I loved it and hate to make you envious, but I have a<em> paperback<\/em> copy of the third book which a friend brought from Switzerland.\u00a0 It may be a British publication, but it is translated and I can&#8217;t remember the title which may be different from the U.S. hardcover.\u00a0 Oscar may have to\u00a0 wait a little longer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s really raining at the moment.
